The hoopla that went along with any Mike Tyson fight is occurring this weekend in the usual place, Vegas. However, this excitement is about a 45 year old balding man, two years removed from a fight and a young giant of a man who is best known as an "Entertainer" for Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) fighting in an octagonal cage for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). When this is put on paper it looks silly that this would be a draw, but this fight is expected to garner more than 1.2 million pay-per-view buys. Only the Mayweather vs De La Hoya fight has come close to this in the last decade in the boxing world. Several MMA events have come close to the million buy rate and one (Lidell vs Ortiz) surpassed it.
MMA, of which UFC is one of many organizations, has become the golden goose for cable systems. This is both thanks to their smart marketing, but also boxing's mistakes over the past 25 years. A few reasons:
- Crooked promoters (such as Don King) have caused people to question the legitimacy of fights. Boxing fans don't usually like professional wrestling for a reason. These promoters have made their sport no better than that.
- Greedy executives wanting their own agenda's have created so many organizations that anyone that wants to become a boxer can now get a title belt when they sign up.
- Lack of promotion of the undercards of broadcasts made the fighters not in the main event seem second rate. The creation of new stars is one of the staples of UFC pay-per-views. Fighters only have a short career and you must always be introducing customers to new up and coming people that can then be main event level in their minds.
- Excitement. Boxing is a one dimensional sport that can have great fights, if the participants workrate is high, but can be very boring if both sides decide to slow it down. In MMA there are a few dull fights but if one side doesn't want to work then they will probably be finished quickly.
- Safety. MMA used to be referred to as "Human Cockfighting" by politicians, such as John McCain. Thanks to changes made to bring it more mainstream MMA is now safer than boxing. In boxing the entire objective is to pound the opponent, usually focusing on the head area. Once this is accomplished enough to knock them down, they can possibly get up and continue the punishment. In MMA there are many different ways to win a fight. Boxing is part, but submissions are just as important. These do not cause the physical damage that constant pounding does in boxing. Also, once a fighter is down and cannot intelligently defend themselves the fight is stopped. They are not allowed a minute to regroup and continue getting hurt.
